The concept of Tonal Signatures was developed by French flute player, composer and improviser Malik Mezzadri, leader of the Magic Malik Orchestra.

I discovered Mezzadri’s work through a track called Vienne.
I was touched by the originality of the musical language in his flute solo. I later found out that besides his own magic and improvisational skills, he was following a concept he developed called Tonal Signatures.
Below is a sample of his flute solo, starting around 3 minutes.
What are
Tonal Signatures ?

For each of the Major, Minor and Melodic Minor scales, it is a collection of significant sub scales, designed to retain the original identity or signature of the full scale. A formal paper was published through IRCAM by Gilbert Nouno and Malik Mezzadri and there is a video of Malik’s presentation at IRCAM (see links at bottom of page).
